Reggae Boyz head coach Steve McClaren has resigned following Jamaica’s failure to secure automatic qualification for the World Cup.
Jamaica Football Federation president Michael Ricketts confirmed the decision moments after the final whistle against Curaçao at the National Stadium, marking the end of McClaren’s short tenure.
"Over the last 18 months I have given everything I have to this job," he said. "Leading this team has been one of the greatest honours of my career."
“Leadership is a service. Tonight, I think the best thing I can do is step aside. They will succeed in March. Thank you, Jamaica - it has been an honour. One love to you all,” the English coach added.
After leaving Manchester United in July 2024, he was assistant manager to Erik ten Hag, McClaren was appointed head coach of the Jamaican national team, succeeding Heimir Hallgrímsson. But a year and a half later, he is now stepping away from the role — while the Icelander he replaced has since led Ireland to a UEFA World Cup playoff spot.
Jamaica failed to secure automatic advancement to the 2026 World Cup after a tense 0–0 home draw with Curaçao on Tuesday evening. They still have a pathway to the final tournament, with one last opportunity coming in the inter-confederation playoff in March. Should they reach the playoff final, the Reggae Boyz would then face the African playoff winner, the Republic of Congo, for a place at the World Cup.
