The Island Music Conference announced on Friday that Shyne will serve as the keynote speaker for its 2026 edition.

The Grammy Award-winning artist turned politician is set to address IMC participants on February 26, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston.

Shyne (Born Jamal Michael Barrow) rose from a Brooklyn barbershop discovery to Bad Boy Records stardom. His 2000 self-titled debut album achieved platinum status, driven by hit singles such as “Bad Boyz” and “Bonnie & Shyne” featuring Barrington Levy. He also contributed to projects by The Notorious B.I.G., Mase, Puff Daddy, Usher, and Lil Wayne, cementing his place in hip-hop’s golden era.

"The intimate panel discussions foster an environment where established and undiscovered talent engage in meaningful conversations."

However, a 1999 nightclub shooting dramatically altered his path. In 2001, Shyne was convicted of assault and unlawful weapon possession, leading to a 10-year prison sentence. While incarcerated, he released his sophomore album, Godfather Buried Alive, through Def Jam in 2004, a project that showcased his resilience and enduring artistry despite his circumstances.

After his release from prison, Shyne transitioned into politics in his homeland of Belize. He served as a Member of Parliament from November 2020 to March 2025, becoming one of the country's most prominent political figures. Most recently, on September 26, 2025, Shyne celebrated the 25th anniversary of his platinum-certified debut album. His keynote "From Stage to State" explores his journey from music to politics and back again.

The fourth edition of the Island Music Conference (IMC) will run from February 25 through 28, 2026, continuing its mission to connect global music industry leaders with Caribbean talent. This year’s event will feature 30 international DJs from the UK, US, Canada, and the Caribbean, all gathering to network with artists and discover new music.

The conference serves as a vital bridge between established professionals and emerging creatives, offering panels that explore practical strategies for navigating today’s music ecosystem. Founded by Orville “Shaggy” Burrell, Judith Bodley, and Sharon Burke, IMC was created to promote transparency, education, and access within the music industry. "The intimate panel discussions foster an environment where established and undiscovered talent engage in meaningful conversations," say the founders. "This results in critical career evolution."
