Jamaica’s 2026 World Cup dream ends after
Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz saw their hopes of a return to the FIFA World Cup come to an end after a 1-0 extra-time defeat to DR Congo in the intercontinental playoff final. The loss extends Jamaica’s 28-year drought since their only appearance at France 1998.
Interim head coach Rudolph Speid restored Leon Bailey to the starting XI, but the Reggae Boyz struggled to create clear scoring opportunities.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo produced the more threatening chances across the 90 minutes, including a disallowed goal in the 86th minute, while captain and goalkeeper Andre Blake delivered a standout performance to keep the contest scoreless through regulation time.
After a goalless 90 minutes, Burnley defender Axel Tuanzebe found the net from close range in the 100th minute, rising from a corner to break Jamaican hearts and decide the contest.
DR Congo have now secured qualification for their first FIFA World Cup appearance since 1974, while Jamaica must wait at least another four years for another opportunity.
