Jaddon, Blending different music genres to create his own unique sound

emerging dancehall artist, Jaddon, is carving a distinct path in the dancehall scene with his unique musical style. His music, a blend of influences from Masicka, Frank Ocean, and Alkaline, is a testament to his raw talent in lyricism, as evident in his standout track, “Fully Black.”

In this new era of dancehall, young talent is continuously being emitted. Rajahwild, Najeeriii, and Armanii, amongst others, are all under 21 and have become widely successful in the last few years, which showcases that age is no longer a limiting factor in musical success. This same trajectory is true for Jaddon, the 20-year-old recording artist from Jamaica.

Speaking to Kaboom Magazine, Jaddon passionately shares his career aspirations, his exciting upcoming projects, and his commitment to his diverse sound.

Jaddon using the music as a platform for express his talent

Originally from Spanish Town, Jamaica, the "Luggage" singer has always had music as a pillar in his life. "I started playing drums at 8 years old and then ventured into playing the keyboard and learning music theory. Then, at 15/16 in high school, I started writing songs."

Shortly after this, he emerged on the dancehall scene, releasing “Vibe to This” in 2020 and freestyles such as “Soveriegn” and “Man Gon Live It” in 2021. Prosperity and aspiration, highlighted in these songs, have gone on to be a recurrent theme in Jaddon’s music, not to flaunt but rather he says to “speak it into being.”

"I’m not a wealthy nor rich person but you know, it's just aspiration to have money, to have the financial freedom to spend money how you would like to."

Following his stream of aspirational singing, his songs started gaining traction in 2023, with his hit single “Fully Black” amassing over 4k on Audiomack alone. He has also collaborated with artist Whodatjj on the track “Top Life”, showing his ability to slow down his sound and be on a softer R&B esq melody.

For Jaddon, he doesn’t wish to be confined to just dancehall. "My music is a melting pot of different genres, you know. My catalogue, as it stands, is very diverse as I’ve done trap dancehall reggae songs and tried to do a UK afro style song as well as Afro R&B." Trap dancehall has been emerging for some time, with Bakersteez notably popularizing the sub-genre, but Jaddon creates a unique blend of sounds in his music, which extends him outside of just being a "dancehall" artist.

Describing where his ideas for his songs originate from, he says he pulls from "personal experience", as well as utilising "literary devices from English Literature in high school, trying to experiment, you know. So, I feel like there are some lyrics in my songs that maybe somebody wouldn’t get because it is like a poem, and I would have to break it down and explain it to them, but that’s how I derive the lyrics."

"TikTok has been the sole element that I consider having progressed my music. It’s an engine and avenue to reach a greater audience".

Outside of his life experiences, Jaddon draws from other people’s life experiences to “allow them to relate to the music.” His audience, which he adamantly cares about, has continued to grow through TikTok, although it originated from Instagram.

"TikTok has been the sole element that I consider having progressed my music. It’s an engine and avenue to reach a greater audience. Instagram, where I started, did reach an audience, but it cannot compare to the size of the Tiktok audience, which has brought me to a bigger milestone."

In terms of milestones, his new manager, “23,” has allowed him to gain more connections to different studios and engineers to record songs. Citing that most of his songs up to this year were recorded entirely on his phone, he says, “Before, I would get a YouTube beat or few times get an instrumental from a producer I know and write my verses, record on my phone and mix it on a digital audio workspace on my laptop.”

Outside of music, Jaddon is pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, hoping to become a Structural Engineer “if that’s the path I decide to take” as “it’s difficult to go on the path of music and engineering, so eventually I will choose one, but for now I’m developing both.”

In the future, he hopes to collaborate with his longtime friend Tishaine Music, with whom he started making music in high school, rising female artist Badskyla, with whom he wants to see “how our sounds will fuse together,” and 9ine, whom he cites as his good friend. “Everybody else, whoever wants to work and based on energy", he said.

As for new music, Jaddon's new single “Luggage” on the Weddy Weddy Riddim with producer God Floww with Ques Time is set to come out Saturday, May 25th.
