Kishane Thompson, continues to shine

The world’s fastest man this year, Kishane Thompson, continued his dominant form following his 9.75-second victory at the Jamaican Trials, by winning the men’s 100m at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meet in Eugene, Oregon.

Thompson clocked a time of 9.85 seconds to secure his first-ever Diamond League win. The Olympic silver medalist edged out Britain’s Zharnel Hughes, who finished second in 9.91 seconds, while American Trayvon Bromell placed third in 9.94 seconds. Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake finished fifth in 10.03 seconds.

Jamaica’s rising sprint star Ackera Nugent delivered an outstanding performance in the women’s 100m hurdles, clocking 12.32 seconds to win ahead of world record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria (12.38s) and American Kendra Harrison (12.50s). The race was not part of the Diamond League events at this meeting.

Nugent, who finished second at the recent Jamaican Championships behind Megan Tapper, shared after the race: “The race was okay. My allergies were killing me, but I was able to hold it together.”

In the women’s 100m, American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden powered to victory with a blistering 10.75 seconds. Olympic gold medalist Julien Alfred of St. Lucia was close behind in 10.77, while the Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith ran a season’s best 10.90 for third place. Newly crowned Jamaican champion Tina Clayton finished fourth in 11.02 seconds. Her twin sister, Tia Clayton, withdrew from the event ahead of the race due to injury.
