Jamaican filmmakers pioneer AI-driven cinema with groundbreaking 20-minute short Madworld, described by director Lloyd "reggaeology" Laing as proof that "Jamaica has always been a country of cultural innovations that have helped illuminate the world with its creations."

Innovation meets AI technology
Fusing Jamaica’s cultural creativity with cutting-edge AI, Madworld is a groundbreaking 20-minute short film that marks several global firsts. Created by local filmmakers using text-to-video (TTV) technology, which is now popular in Hollywood, the project positions Jamaica at the forefront of AI-powered cinema.
Set in a futuristic steampunk world within the mind of a comatose Jamaican girl, Madworld follows her father’s transformation into a steampunk Rasta superhero, using a reggae-driven soundtrack as a bridge to her recovery. The music was produced by Rhaatid, a German rock-reggae band, in collaboration with Jamaican singer-songwriter Keith "Roughhouse" Powell, who also drew from his Madworld EP to enrich the film’s sonic experience. It’s a bold fusion of cultural storytelling and advanced technology.
The short film sets three major milestones in global cinema. It is the first text-to-video (TTV) short film produced in the Caribbean, the first 3D CGI animated film to feature a Jamaican lead character, and the world’s first animated film powered by a reggae-driven, AI-generated soundtrack.
"Jamaica has always been a country of cultural innovations that have helped illuminate the world with its creations," said Lloyd "Reggaeology" Laing, who served as lead animator, scriptwriter, and creative director for the experimental project. "The elders used to say 'you haffi tek you han an mek fashion.' This film embodies that spirit of making something extraordinary from what we have."
The project is a collaboration between U.S.-based private equity firm IslandRock Entertainment, local 3D animation startup SYNANIM CGI, Jamaican hypermedia studio GOJO Media Works, and German-based Jamaican singer/songwriter Keith "Roughhouse" Powell, who composed the film’s reggae-driven soundtrack. Created in just seven weeks, the production demonstrates the efficiency and creative potential of AI-assisted filmmaking.
The film’s early reception has exceeded expectations, earning enthusiastic feedback from private screenings and international trailer viewings. “So far, the response from Madworld's first two private screenings has been phenomenal, and the trailers have been well received by people all over the world,” shared Laing with pride.
Its release comes at a pivotal time for Jamaica’s film industry, as the Government invests over $600 million in new film projects and production incentives. Madworld serves as a timely showcase of the island’s potential in next-generation, AI-driven filmmaking.
Looking ahead, Laing emphasized the importance of taking initiative. "To move in the right direction, you have to start walking, don't wait for a drive," he reflected on the project’s significance. "Walt Disney started with a mouse and ended up with Disneyland. Perry Henzell shot Jamaica's most iconic film with little to nothing, and Bogle The Dancer said, 'Style Under Pressure.' So you have to start somewhere."
"Madworld" is currently in private screening phase, with an online premiere scheduled for mid-August 2025.
