Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa, international dancehall superstar Skeng has personally undertaken a significant charitable mission across rural communities in Trelawny and St. James. Known for his charitable nature, often contrasting his hard-edged stage persona, Skeng distributed hundreds of essential relief packages directly to affected residents.
The initiative was led by Skeng himself, with support from friends, including American-Trinidadian rap star Nicki Minaj, represented by her team members wearing The Barbz Foundation T-shirts, alongside dancehall producer Droptop Records through his Droptop Foundation. The group moved swiftly to ensure supplies such as diapers, non-perishable food items, hygiene products, two-burner stoves, gas cans, flashlights, and power banks reached those most in need.
Skeng’s manager, Cara Burke of Showtime Services Management, confirmed the initiative was spearheaded by the dancehall artiste and praised his dedication to genuine philanthropy. “I’m proud of him,” said Burke. “He used his own initiative, no media, no camera, no clout chasing. This was purely from the heart for his people.”
Minaj later reposted clips from the effort, writing, “Plus tmrw & possibly longer. One Love, Jamaica. Love you.”
The extent of Skeng’s personal commitment was further emphasized by his mother, Miss Williams, a primary school teacher for over 20 years. “He went and purchased everything,” she noted, highlighting the artist’s personal financial investment in the relief effort.
For Skeng, this is just the beginning of a sustained response. “This is just the start,” the artist stated. The initiative has already garnered attention and support from peers and industry friends. Burke confirmed that the give-back campaign led by Skeng and his team and supported by contributions from Nicki Minaj, Droptop Foundation, among others, will continue over the foreseeable future as communities work to rebuild. “Me nuh want we forget the ones dem weh nobody can see so dem nuh member dem,” added the Jamaican rockstar.
