Shaggy and RikRok’s global megahit “It Wasn’t Me” has reached another major milestone in the United Kingdom, earning a 5X Platinum certification more than 25 years after its release.
According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the track received its fifth Platinum award on Friday, August 21, after surpassing the equivalent of 3 million units in sales and streams in the UK, as measured by the Official Charts Company. The song was previously certified 4X Platinum in 2023.
Featured on Shaggy’s 2000 multi-platinum album Hot Shot, “It Wasn’t Me” features vocals from British-Jamaican singer RikRok, given name Ricardo Ducent. Released as the album’s lead single through MCA Records, the track became Shaggy’s breakthrough pop smash and one of the biggest hits of his career, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and giving the Jamaican superstar his first chart-topper on the tally. His earlier smash “Boombastic” had peaked at No. 3 in 1995.
The classic has also collected certifications across several international markets. It is certified X3 Platinum in Australia, Platinum in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, along with Gold certifications in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, further underlining the song’s enduring global reach more than two decades after its release.
