Nigerian Afropop star Mr Eazi continues the rollout for his forthcoming dancehall mixtape Yard & Yanga, releasing two new singles from the collaborative project with Mixpak producer Dre Skull.
The latest drops include the playful, hypnotic “Hide Your Love” and “Remember That,” featuring veteran dancehall star Cham. While “Hide Your Love” rides a throbbing minimalist riddim, “Remember That” taps into the stripped-down sound of late-1990s dancehall, with Cham joining Mr Eazi on the throwback-inspired track.
The releases follow last month’s “Lambo,” featuring dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel, as Mr Eazi and Dre Skull build toward the full project.
Yard & Yanga celebrates the longstanding musical connection between West Africa and the Caribbean, with its title combining Jamaican patois and Nigerian Pidgin references. The project also extends Mr Eazi and Dre Skull’s history of collaborations, which includes “Sekkle and Bop” with Popcaan and “Dance Pon Me.”
Dancehall has long influenced Mr Eazi’s music, dating back to his early releases. “In an alternate universe, I would have been an Afro dancehall artist,” Mr Eazi previously said. “This is dancehall but my own interpretation.”
Now with three singles from the project released, Mr Eazi turns his attention toward the full Yard & Yanga mixtape, slated for a fourth-quarter release through Mixpak Records and emPawa Africa.
