Sean Paul continues UK chart legacy

Global dancehall-pop superstar Sean Paul has earned a Gold certification in the United Kingdom for his crossover hit “Gimme the Light,” issued by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) on Friday, January 9. The certification recognises the equivalent of over 400,000 units in combined sales and streaming across the UK.

Originally released in Jamaica in 2001 as “Give Me the Light,” the track was built on the Buzz Riddim and marked the debut hit production for Miami-based duo Troyton Rami and Roger Mackenzie of Black Shadow Records. The single was later released internationally in 2002 and appeared on Sean Paul’s second studio album, Dutty Rock (2002).

“Gimme the Light” became Sean Paul’s first major global hit, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and securing top-20 placements in Canada, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, helping to launch one of the most successful international careers in dancehall history.

The single had previously achieved Gold certification in Canada and has now extended its success in the UK, upgrading from Silver to Gold status.

This latest achievement marks Sean Paul’s second UK certification in 2026, arriving just days after his global smash Like Glue” was officially certified Platinum in the UK on January 2, surpassing 600,000 units in combined sales and streaming. The milestone comes as the global icon celebrates his 53rd birthday this week, further cementing his enduring legacy on the world stage.
