British neo-soul singer Olivia Dean cemented her rise as one of pop’s standout breakout stars after winning Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Entering the night as the frontrunner, Dean’s win was powered by the warm, soulful romantic pop of songs like “Man I Need” and “So Easy (To Fall In Love)”, both of which became transatlantic hits last year.
She edged out fellow Brit Lola Young and R&B standout Leon Thomas, becoming the first British artist to claim the honour since Dua Lipa in 2019.
Accepting the award, the 26-year-old reflected on her roots: “I’m up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant. I’m a product of bravery, and I think those people ought to be celebrated,” she said, adding, “We’re nothing without each other.”
The win also extends a remarkable Grammy streak, with Dean becoming the ninth consecutive female artist to claim Best New Artist, following Chappell Roan, who took home the 2025 award, Victoria Monét, Samara Joy, Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Alessia Cara. The most recent male winner in the category remains Chance the Rapper, who took the award in 2017.
