Reggae Boyz striker Michail Antonio is expected to be sidelined for at least a year after undergoing surgery for a broken leg sustained in a serious car accident on Saturday afternoon, according to British media reports.
Antonio, who was airlifted to a hospital after his Ferrari crashed in Epping, is facing a prolonged recovery following surgery yesterday. While it remains uncertain whether the 34-year-old’s injuries could force him to end his football career, it is almost certain he will not return to play this season. Even in the best-case scenario, there are fears he may need at least a year of rehabilitation.
A West Ham statement read: “West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio has undergone surgery for a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon. Michail will remain under observation in hospital over the coming days.”
West Ham will show their support for the striker during Monday’s match against Wolves. "Our players will show their support for team-mate Michail Antonio tonight, following his road traffic accident on Saturday.
Ahead of our fixture against Wolves, the players will warm up in special ‘Antonio 9’ shirts, as well as walk out in tops adorning the striker’s name," stated the club.
Antonio joined West Ham from Nottingham Forest in 2015 and quickly became a fan favorite among Hammers supporters. Over his career with the East Londoners, he has scored 83 goals in 323 appearances and played a pivotal role in their Europa Conference League win in 2023. Since 2021, Antonio has also established himself as the leading striker for the Reggae Boyz, scored five goals in 21 international caps.
