Jamaican football great Allan “Skill” Cole dies at 74

Jamaican football legend Allan “Skill” Cole has died at 74. The former Santos and Jamaica national team star, who also managed reggae icon Bob Marley, passed away on Tuesday evening.

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness paid tribute to Cole’s legacy in a social media post, writing: “Skill’s brilliance on the football field made him one of the greatest of his generation, a player who carried the pride and passion of Jamaica every time he stepped onto the field. His influence, however, stretched far beyond sports. As tour manager for Bob Marley & the Wailers and co-writer of the timeless anthem War, he became part of a cultural movement that defined an era and carried Jamaica’s voice to the world.”

Holness added, “Allan ‘Skill’ Cole lived a life of talent, courage, and impact.” He expressed deep sadness at Cole’s passing while extending condolences to his family, friends, and the many who loved and admired him.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, Olivia Grange, joins the mourning, writing on her social accounts: "Deeply saddened by the passing of Allan “Skill” Cole, Jamaica’s greatest footballer, the first Jamaican & foreigner to play in Brazil’s league, and former Tour Manager for Bob Marley & the Wailers. A true patriot. We shall miss him."
