Jamaican-born billionaire and philanthropist Dr. Trisha Bailey, arguably the richest woman to ever emerge from the island, is making a personal donation in support of the Jamaican National Basketball Team’s efforts to raise $4 million for a dedicated training facility in Jamaica.
The team is currently in training camp in Boca Raton, Florida, preparing for the FIBA World Cup 2027 Americas Pre-Qualifiers, with newly added veteran NBA guard Norman Powell among the roster.
A former athlete now based in the U.S., Bailey shared the moment on her Instagram page. “What I witnessed filled me with pride and renewed hope. Jamaica is on the rise once again—this time, through basketball. Just as we’ve shown the world our greatness in track & field, football, bobsled, and more, we are now positioning ourselves to make a global mark in basketball,” she wrote.
Through her company, Bailey’s Medical Equipment and Supplies, she continues to show unwavering commitment to her homeland. “Every year on my birthday, I choose to give back as a way of expressing my gratitude to God—for life, for strength, and for the grace that has carried me through seasons where the odds were stacked against me. And still, I rise.”
Dr. Bailey spoke about her donation and encouraged others to join her in supporting the cause. “This year, I’m making a personal donation to support the Jamaican National Basketball Team in their mission to raise $4 million to build a dedicated training facility in Jamaica. This facility won’t just serve our national team—it will be a home where we can host powerhouse nations like the USA and others, giving our athletes the resources and respect they truly deserve,” she shared.
“I can’t do it alone. I’m inviting you—especially those who believe in the beauty, strength, and potential of our beloved Jamaica—to join me. Whether as a birthday gift to me or simply as a gesture of unity and patriotism, your contribution will help write a new chapter in Jamaica’s sports legacy. Together, let’s lift up our athletes. Let’s invest in their dreams. Let’s believe in Jamaica,” the philanthropist echoed.
Jamaica is on the rise in the basketball world, with names like Amen and Ausar Thompson, center Nick Richards, and Toronto Raptors star Scottie Barnes among those circulating as potential additions who could switch allegiance through their Jamaican heritage.
A high-standard training facility is undoubtedly necessary, as Jamaica Basketball President Paulton Gordon recently told Kaboom Magazine in an exclusive interview. “Professional players who visit the island often request a space for off-season training that mirrors the facilities they have in North America and Europe,” he said.
