Chaka Demus & Pliers add New Zealand platinum
Jamaican iconic duo Chaka Demus & Pliers’ reggae cover of “She Don’t Let Nobody (But Me)” is now certified Platinum in New Zealand more than 30 years after its release.
According to Recorded Music NZ, the track earned Platinum certification on Thursday, April 16, surpassing 30,000 units in sales and streaming across the country, as measured by the Official Charts Company.
The song was originally recorded by American soul legend Curtis Mayfield and featured on his 1982 album Love Is the Place. Released as a single in 1981 via Boardwalk Records, it reached No. 15 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart, laying the foundation for its later crossover appeal.
In 1993, Chaka Demus & Pliers reimagined the track as “She Don’t Let Nobody” for their fourth studio album Tease Me, which peaked at No. 6 on the New Zealand Albums Chart. Produced by Lloyd 'Gitsy' Willis, Sly and Robbie, and Trish Farrell, the single was released by Mango Records in late 1993 and became a top-20 hit across multiple markets, including No. 4 in the UK, No. 9 in Ireland, and No. 12 in the Netherlands.
The leading and most-renowned track from the same Tease Me album, “Murder She Wrote,” earned UK Gold certification in 2022 after surpassing 400,000 units, further cementing Chaka Demus & Pliers’ enduring global impact.
