Teejay returns to ‘Hustle Mode’ with No Distraction Album
Dancehall star Teejay is working on his upcoming album No Distraction and says the project brings him back to the energy that first made fans connect with him.
“We talking about the 2016 Teejay,” he told Overtime Media last Friday during a visit to Trinidad and Tobago, describing this phase as “hustle mode.”
The album is already about 87% complete, and Teejay says it carries added meaning as he now moves as an independent artiste.
While he confirmed he is no longer signed to Warner Records, he remains affiliated with Warner Chappell on the publishing side. “Teejay is an independent artiste now,” he said, explaining that No Distraction is especially important as it is being built entirely on his own terms.
His current single, “Perfect Body,” is already being pushed as a summer hit, but the Montego Bay native deejay says the inspiration came from wanting women to feel confident. “A lot of females out there feel insecure of themselves, so I just want them to know that they’re special,” he noted. “Don’t worry yourself if somebody say that you’re not beautiful. You’re beautiful to me.”
The interview also revealed just how much Trinidad and the wider Caribbean mean to Teejay’s movement. He said “Airplane Mode” has been doing especially well in Trinidad and other Caribbean territories, even more than in Jamaica in some cases. “Without Jamaica, without Trinidad and the Caribbean, our music wouldn’t even reach places,” he echoed.
“Without Jamaica, without Trinidad and the Caribbean, our music wouldn’t even reach places.”
One of the biggest moments came when Teejay said he would like to work with both Kman 6ixx and Medz Boss, framing the idea as a unity move rather than a controversy.
“Right now, honestly, me woulda like to do a song with Kman 6ixx and me woulda like to do a song with Medz Boss same way,” Teejay shared. “That's why I'm saying it on the interview right now, so they can see it and hopefully say, yo, up top, make we work together. Make we do this for the future, for the youths. We need unity right now, love, joy... Let’s live.”
Teejay also confirmed that UpTop Fest is his own event, with UK dates first, Jamaica set for December 27, and plans to bring the experience to Trinidad and other Caribbean territories.
His 2024 debut album, I Am Chippy, released under Warner Music Group, debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Now, with his sophomore album in the pipeline, Teejay is entering a new chapter on his own terms.
