Popcaan Debuts First Collaboration With Vybz Kartel's Son Likkle Vybz
Rising dancehall producer Joel Engineer continues to make bold moves with his Unlocked Riddim, this time bringing together Popcaan and Likkle Vybz on the new single, “Clean,” released on Friday, June 26.
The collaboration carries added significance, marking Popcaan's first official recording with one of Vybz Kartel's sons. The release serves as a full-circle moment, with the Unruly Boss joining forces with the son of the dancehall legend who discovered him, introduced him as his protégé, and helped launch his career. On "Clean," both artistes trade confident verses centered on wellness, success, and their lifestyles.
"Seeing Popcaan and Likkle Vybz on a song together is a special moment, not just for me as a producer but for dancehall," said Joel. "From the beginning, I wanted the Unlocked Riddim to bring together different sounds, different generations and music that people can genuinely connect with. The response so far has been incredible, and we're just getting started."
The Unlocked Riddim launched the previous Friday with Popcaan's title track, “Unlocked,” alongside Vybz Kartel's “The Night Just Begin,” setting the tone for the star-studded juggling. Friday's rollout also included Natebadz's “Draco,” with additional tracks from Najeeriii and other artistes still to come.
As anticipation builds for the remaining releases, Joel says his focus has always been on creating a project where every track stands on its own. “I want every song to have its own identity and leave an impact. I hope listeners appreciate the work that's gone into this project and continue supporting the music as the rest of the riddim unfolds,” he said.
Joel, who is also Popcaan's nephew, views the project as a major milestone as he continues to establish himself among Jamaica's next generation of producers. With more than six tracks planned, the Unlocked Riddim further showcases the teenage producer's ability to unite established stars and emerging talent on a single project.
