Denver Nuggets star guard Jamal Murray is sending prayers to Jamaica following the devastating damage caused by Hurricane Melissa and has pledged to support the island’s recovery.
“Praying for Jamaica! I will help with the recovery!” the Canadian guard, Murray wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Partnering with Food For the Poor, Murray is set to help supply food and other essential relief items to affected communities.
Murray, who is of Jamaican descent, visited the island last month to host his second Blue Arrow Camp at Mount Alvernia High School in Montego Bay, where roughly 200 young Jamaicans participated in training sessions led by the Canadian-born 2023 NBA champion.
Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm on Tuesday, sweeping across the western parishes and leaving grisly scars on the landscape, especially in St. Elizabeth, St. Thomas, St. James, St. Ann, and Clarendon. Images of the devastation are still emerging in the hours following the storm’s passage.
Meanwhile, the NBA’s Miami Heat has also pledged US$1 million toward Jamaica’s Hurricane Melissa recovery, in collaboration with the Micky & Madeleine Arison Family Foundation and Carnival Corporation.
