The football world is in shock on Thursday following reports that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a tragic car accident in Spain, along with his brother André. The fatal road traffic accident in Spain occurred in the province of Zamora early Thursday morning.
According to Spanish outlet Marca, the two brothers, both professional footballers, were travelling together when their vehicle veered off the road and burst into flames. Eyewitnesses contacted emergency services after seeing the fire, but both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Jota, 28, had married just two weeks prior and was a father of three. Born in Porto, he reached the peak of his career this season, winning the Premier League title with Liverpool and helping Portugal to victory in the UEFA Nations League final.
He began his professional journey with Paços de Ferreira before joining Atlético Madrid in 2016. Loan spells at FC Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers followed, with Jota playing a key role in Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League in 2018. He later signed permanently with the club.
In 2020, Jota made a £41 million move to Liverpool, where he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances over five seasons. His trophy haul with the Reds included the Premier League, FA Cup (2022), and two EFL Cups (2022 and 2024).
He represented Portugal 49 times, netting 14 goals and playing a vital role in their Nations League triumphs.
