Major Lazer to celebrate 2009 Debut Album with previously unreleased tracks
Major Lazer is set to celebrate 2009 Debut Album, 'Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do' with a deluxe digital reissue on November 15.
The edition features four bonus tracks, including “Nobody Move” with dancehall legend Vybz Kartel, which debuts today along with an animated video by Ferry Gouw. This marks another collaboration between Major Lazer and Kartel, following their hit “Pon De Floor.”
“Nobody Move” references Yellowman’s 1984 dancehall classic and is set to a dreamy reggae rhythm reminiscent of Major Lazer’s 2012 hit "Get Free." A vinyl reissue of the album will also be available.
“‘Nobody Move’ is a long-lost gem newly unearthed from the Major Lazer vault, so I wanted the video to feel like a newly found VHS tape of an obscure ’80s cartoon T.V. show,” Ferry Gouw says. “The tape feels like someone has compiled their favorite moments from the show, a ‘Best Of’ of sorts, except these were recorded over footage of home videos and other T.V. shows and adverts. This video was also an homage to my very first video for Major Lazer for ‘Hold The Line,’ except this time I didn’t animate it on tracing paper but worked with the brilliant Andy Baker Studio to bring it to life.”
Originally released in June 2009, 'Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do' marked a turning point for Major Lazer's Diplo and Switch. Blending dancehall, dub reggae, and electronic beats, they anticipated the rise of EDM while collaborating with Jamaican legends like Vybz Kartel, T.O.K,, Mr. Vegas, and indie acts like Santigold. This experimentation reshaped popular music and set Major Lazer on a path to global success.
“If you have a vision, you gotta go with it and that’s what we did with this first album,” Diplo added, looking back on the project.
