Ras Ajai has passed away at 47

Jamaican recording artiste, songwriter, and actor Ras Ajai has died. According to reports, the 47-year-old was shot and killed in Waterford, Portmore.

Hailing from St. Catherine, Ras Ajai had been active in the music industry since 2012 and was widely recognized for his self-described "ghetto gospel" style, blending the realities of street life with uplifting messages and a mature perspective.

Ras Ajai was signed to Sean Paul's Dutty Rock Productions label in 2018, where he established himself as one of the imprint's rising talents. In a previous interview with Kaboom Magazine, he spoke about the profound influence the Grammy Award-winning dancehall star had on his career. "Working with Sean has been a blessing. I learn by watching. I watch how he leads, and I follow his example. I want to mimic his footsteps within this music industry - the way that he's made an impact on the genre, on the world."

Ras Ajai portraying Claudius Massop in the Paramount Pictures biopic Bob Marley: One Love, a role that introduced him to an even wider international audience.

Speaking on the opportunity, he said on that interview, "I've always been fond of him from the stories I've heard. It was definitely a blessing, and the sacrifices made, like cutting my locs for the role, were worth it. There is only one Bob Marley movie being made, and it's going to last, so I get to be a part of history."

Reflecting on the importance of music in his life, he also told Kaboom Magazine, "When you choose music, you feel at peace. You feel like you belong, and balance is achieved."
