Colombia, through its government, has demonstrated a generous act of solidarity by donating 22 tons of emergency relief supplies to support Jamaicans affected by Hurricane Melissa.
The supplies were transported aboard six Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) vessels, which sought safe harbour in Cartagena, Colombia during the storm and were warmly welcomed. The vessels arrived in Port Royal on Tuesday, where officials formally received the shipment.
“The Government and people of Colombia donated relief supplies that were transported aboard two Jamaica Defence Force vessels, which were sheltered by the Colombian Navy at the ARC Bolívar Naval Base in Cartagena during the passage of Hurricane Melissa,” the JDF shared.
A symbolic handover ceremony was held in the presence of Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and Her Excellency Emiliana Bernard Stephenson, Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to Jamaica.
Colombia joins several Latin American nations including El Salvador, Venezuela, and Panama that have extended support to Jamaica through aid and relief supplies.
