Cali FR is one to watch as dancehall’s new Wave continues to rise

There are some voices that naturally catch your ear with their substance, delivery and lyrics. With Dancehall remaining a prolific breeding ground for emerging talent each and every year, fast-rising artiste Cali FR is one of the names getting attention this year.

Hailing from St. Mary, Jamaica, Cali FR brings a raw delivery and smooth melodic edge, while his sound blends modern Dancehall with storytelling based on ambition, struggle and the pursuit of greatness, reflecting his rural Jamaican upbringing and dreams beyond the island.

The momentum began building in the latter part of last year, highlighted by tracks such as “Phenomenal” and “Monument,” with the latter becoming his first release to surpass one million views on YouTube, currently sitting at more than 1.3 million.

In recent months, Cali FR has continued to capitalize on that attention. His track “Map” began making noise, while his latest release, “Bread,” pushed things further, peaking at No. 3 on the local Apple Music chart.

“Bread Inspired by a feeling of being put ‘to the back’ and realizing one has to get up and just make it happen. The yearn for money speaks to many people’s reality - Feeling less and unwanted because you lack a certain financial stability, especially feeling this way about yourself, inspiring the line ‘No body nu love you if u na nah bread’,” he explained about the inspiration behind the track in an exclusive interview with Kaboom Magazine.

“Bread” continues a run that has showcased a more substance-driven side of Cali FR’s music, with the emerging artiste looking to connect everyday realities with the ambition to rise above them.

“My music will always find that balance because I live them myself. This is me and people’s truth. Monument spoke on a trending inner city topic seen as a means of ‘getting out’ and on top. While I wanted Bread to target a wider audience, within the same theme of getting out there and finding a way - 9-5, hustlers and anybody trying to achieve something from nothing.”

That approach, he says, comes naturally rather than from an attempt to distinguish himself from the crowded field of emerging Dancehall talent. “Nothing separates me from others, I just strive for greatness within myself and sing about things I see, feel and live,” he expressed about his mantra.

His influences are similarly broad, with Cali FR drawing not only from Jamaican music but from the environment that shaped him. “I’m influenced by music generally. I listen to many genres and also draw inspiration from my surroundings in St. Mary.”

Turns substance into momentum

With the momentum around his name continuing to grow, Cali FR is now focused on carrying his music beyond Jamaica and connecting with a much broader audience, while maintaining the substance and positivity at the heart of his approach. “Reaching wider audiences of course, and just spreading music with substance and positivity as far as it can go. I see no limit.”

With that pursuit of greatness rooted in the experience of growing up in rural Jamaica and dreaming beyond borders, Cali FR is beginning to see the momentum translate beyond the music, with stage show bookings starting to come his way.
