Dancehall legend Bounty Killer is set to receive one of Kingston’s highest civic honours, following a resolution passed by the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation. As part of the recognition, a street he once walked as a young boy in his community of Seaview Gardens will be renamed in his honour.
Councillor Patrick Roberts, who previously managed Beenie Man, highlighted that longevity at Bounty Killer’s level is no small feat. Reflecting on the moment, an elated Bounty Killer shared, “It’s an incredible feeling to be honoured by your own people who knew you as a little boy and witnessed your growth into this remarkable individual. It’s an overwhelming sense of gratitude and appreciation.”
He continued, “This honour holds special significance for me. As a child, I spent my days playing on that same street in torn pants and no shoes, drenched in sweat, with my friends until the streetlights came on. The fact that the same street is now named after me is a monumental achievement. Being honoured with the key to the same city, Kingston, where I was born and raised, is a dream come true. Especially when I already call myself the King of Kingston, this is an absolute honour.”
With more than three decades in the music industry, Bounty Killer is being recognised not only for his enduring influence on dancehall but also for his philanthropic efforts and contributions to Jamaican culture.
He was previously conferred with the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) on October 21, 2024, at the National Indoor Sports Centre, in recognition of his impact on Jamaican music. In recent years, he has also received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Caribbean Music Awards, along with a similar honour at the 2023 International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA).
